Dr. Dinesh Bhattarai is a former Nepali diplomat, foreign policy expert, and academic with nearly three decades of experience in diplomacy, international relations, and public service. He served as Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Ministers of Nepal in 2014–2015 and 2017–2018 and was Nepal’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Rome, and Vienna from 2007 to 2012.
During his diplomatic career, he also served as Ambassador of Nepal to Switzerland, concurrently accredited to Italy and Croatia, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Nepal in Washington, D.C., and First Secretary (Political Affairs) at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi. He held several senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including leadership roles in the South Asia, SAARC, BIMSTEC, United Nations, International Organizations and Multilateral Economic Affairs divisions.
Dr. Bhattarai holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, a Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Development from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, and degrees in Public Administration, Law, and Commerce.
He is currently a Faculty Member at the Institute of Crisis Management Studies, Samarpan Academy, Tribhuvan University, and teaches at the Department of Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, Tribhuvan University. He continues to contribute to scholarship and public discourse on Nepal’s foreign policy, diplomacy, international relations, and global affairs. He is the author/editor of books on Nepal’s foreign policy and Nepal-India relations and has published widely in national and international publications.
